2011 Scholarships Given by Odegaard Aviation   Odegaard Aviation has donated a $500 scholarship to a student interested in the Aviation field. This award was matched by another $500 award from the Kindred Area Dollars for Scholars chapter. Recipient: Miranda Smith Allie Tantilla Wood Scholarship Given by Barbara Wood   This scholarship is made possible by Allie Tantilla Wood's daughter, Barbara Wood of Tacoma, WA.   Allie was a native of Northern Minnesota, on of eight children born to Finnish immigrants. She was the 1937 valedictorian of Hibbing High Schoool and she was a devout Christian, living her life for her faith, family, and friends.   A strong proponent of education, Allie believed in the power of one... that one person could make a difference. Recipient: Hanna Klinnert Fredrickson Boulger Scholarship Given by Peter Fredrickson   $500 is awarded by the Peter Fredrickson and Boulger Funeral Home, given in memory of his twin brother, David. David was a 1969 graduate of Kindred high school. The Fredrikson family has deep roots in the Davenport area, dating back many decades. Peter Fredrikson maintains and operates one of the oldest funeral homes in ND. Recipient: Katie Schmit In Memory of Paul and Doris Hertsgaard Given by Ruth, John and Craig Hertsgaard   John and Craig Hertsgaard, along with their sister Ruth, are pleased to award two scholarships in honor of their parents, Paul and Doris Hertsgaard. The Hertsgaard family was among the earliest families settling in the Kindred area. Paul and Doris were Kindred natives, Paul was a life long farmer, a member of the Kindred School board, and was instrumental in the success of our Dollars for Scholars chapter. They were members of Kindred Lutheran Church. Their five grandchildren each have received Dollars for Scholars awards. By honoring two graduates, the family hope to instill "pay it forward." Recipient: Andrew Hebl and Benjamin Gilbertson Given by Ed and Joann Jameson   Ed and Joann Jameson have donated a $500 scholarship to a student who will pursue a study in the field of animal science. Recipient: Erick Veralrud Given by RDO of Kindred   RDO of Kindred has provided a $1000 scholarship to four different students. RDO has been a great supporter of our chapter for many years. These scholarships are given to students who will study in an ag related field. Recipients: Jace Evanger, Matthew Ottis, Katelyn Lee, AJ Luick Given by Hektner, Lybeck, Erickson Insurance   Hektner, Lybeck, Erickson Insurance is proud to award their 3rd scholarship through our chapter, in the amount of $500. Originally founded in 1927, this insurance agency is locally owned and is an independent insurance agency, representing all types of insurance, but specializing in farm and crop. Hektner, Lybeck, Erickson is celebrating their 81st year serving the Kindred and surrounding area for insurance needs. Recipient: Paige Hanson In Memory of Myron Olsgaard   Myron Olsgaard was a farmer, rancher in the Kindred area. Myron and his wife Olive have supported Kindred DFS for many years. They are proud that all six of their grandsons received college educations, and are happy to help other students meet their education goals. Recipient: Karissa Johnson Given by Lynn and Joyce Overboe   Lynn and Joyce Overboe have honored Lynn's parents, Edwin and Helen Overboe in establishing scholarships in their names. Edwin farmed in the Kindred area, and Helen was a former teacher at the Kindred school. Recipient: Taylor Lammers and Matthew Hall Given by Paul and Julie Jensen   Paul and Julie Jensen are awarding their second scholarship. Their parents were educators, as are Paul and Julie. They see daily the struggles to educate children and prepare them for higher education. Their three children have received DFS scholarships and we thank them for their pay it forward contribution. Recipient: Kaitlyn Johnson Given by Wilfred and Gladys Bakko   Wilfred and the late Gladys Bakko of Walcott, have donated $500 to a student who is interested in Horticulture or agriculture. Wilfred farmed in the Walcott area, and his children all graduated from Walcott and Kindred high schoools. Gladys was a strong believer in persuing higher education. Recipient: Dylan Torgerson Given by Janet Luick   Janet Luick is awarding a $500 scholarship this year. Janet has been a wonderful supporter of our chapter, helping in any capacity she can, and we very much appreciate all she does. Recipient: Mackenzie Bickel Given by Leland and Florence Hans   Leland and Florence Hans of Davenport, have been strong supporters of our mission to help send students to college. For the past six years they have awarded a $500 scholarship to a student pursuing a career as a nurse. As we had no applicants for nursing, we've presented the scholarship to a student who will study pre-med. This award is also matched by a $500 scholarship from ND Dollars for Scholars and Bank of North Dakota. Recipient: Danielle Faller Given by Industrial Builders   Industrial Builders, one of the foremost contractors in the upper Midwest, has donated $15,000 to our Dollars for Scholars chapter. We are happy to be able to award a scholarship for many years, for $1000 to a student entering the mechanical or construction trade. Recipient: Ben Reinke In Memory of Conrad and Louise Jordheim Given by Barb Blilie   Conrad and Louise Jordheim farmed in the Walcott area, raised eight children and instilled the values of education, faith in God and service to others. Here are some comments from their children:   Louise grew up in a time when higher education for women was the exception rather than the rule. She and her twin sister were the oldest of twelve children and since money was scarce, they drew straws to see which one could go to college. Louise was the lucky one. She worked for her room and board to attend both high school and college. Louise followed her mother's footsteps and earned a teaching certificate from Valley City state Teachers College in 1939. Louise was determined to teach her children the importance of education.   Conrad worked diligently on the farm to provide for his family. As children, we learned the value of a dollar and the importance of team work with our siblings as well as our neighbors. He modeled a gentle spirit and love of the land.   The recipient of ths award exemplifies qualities of educational leadership, community service, a strong wortk ethic, compassion and empathy for others. We honor our parents, Conrad and Louise Jordheim, by establishing this perpetual $500 scholarship in their names. Recipient: Hannah Klinnert In Memory of Mabel Rockstad Given by Alex Gavora, Lorry Heubner, Cathy Sandstrom, Karen Svendsen, Barb Wood, and Cheryl Engen Lindstrom   Mabel Rockstad's first gift to Dollars for Scholars was in 1992, in memory of two of her grandsons. She was a believer in our chapter's mission.   As a young widow, she wondered how she was going to send her two youngest children to college. She raised sheep, and kept the wool and lamb money in a special college fund. In the late 60's when her son, Ron, went off to college in Mayville, she added to his college fund by making well over 200 neckties for him to sell to faculty, staff and fellow students.   Well versed in what it takes to send a child to college, Mabel would be proud to award this scholarship. In her passing this year, Mabel's perpetual scholarship is being carried on with contributions totaling $1250 by the following individuals in Mabel's name: Alex Gavora, Lorry Heubner, Cathy Sandstrom, Karen Svendsen, Barb Wood, and Cheryl Engen Lindstrom. Recipient: Mary Frietag Given by Cass County Electric   Cass County Electric Cooperative along with their commitment to community, created an annual scholarship fund, which administers $500 awards to thirteen Dollars for Scholars chapters within the Cass County Service territory. This specific award is being matched by another $500 scholarship from ND Dollars for Scholars and Bank of North Dakota. Recipient: Keely Torgerson Given by Kindred Lions   Kindred Lions scholarship criteria for their award:   -cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher   -participated in 4 years of extracurricular activities   -demonstrate significant willingness to participate in city,church or other community activities Recipient: Dylan Torgerson Given by Bank of North Dakota   This award was possible due to chapter members attending a DFS workshop. Recipient: Mary Frietag In Memory of Cole Halland Given by Joan and Steve Halland   Last year at this time we were saddened by the untimely death of Cole Halland. He was a 2004 recipient of a DFS scholarship. His family is honoring his memory with a donation Recipient: Jason Van Horn In Memory of Jeremy Anderson Given by Dwight and June Anderson   Jeremy Anderson was a 1997 graduate of KHS. After his tragic death his parents have donated yearly gifts. Interestingly enough, he was not awarded a DFS scholarship but both of his younger brothers were. Recipient: Michael Haberman In Memory of Ilert Spelhaug Given by The Spelhaug Family   Ilert Spelhaug was the 4th youngest of 13 children. He grew up on a farm 13 miles from Wyndmere. He had to stay in Wyndmere with older siblings during the school year so he could attend High school which he graduated from in 1935. He then attended Hanson mechanical trade school in Fargo. He was a farmer in the Kindred area after buying his father-in-law's farm in 1955. His mother-in-law, wife, 3 children, son-in-law and 4 grandchildren are all KHS grads. His grandchildren are all DFS scholarship recipients. He was so proud of his 4 grandchildren. They are college graduates, one with a masters and one with her doctorate in PT. Recipient: Luis Chavez In Memory of Ralph and Thelma Trom Given by Janna Lindoo   Ralph Trom was a long time banker in the Kindred community. We thank their daughter, Janna Lindoo, a Kindred graduate, for making this annual $500 scholarship possible. Recipient: Michael Haberman In Memory of Judy Baletka Given by Dr. Leanne Converse and Lianne Rockstad   Judy Baletka was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from University of Alaska, with a degree in fine arts. She received her masters degree in Museum Studies from the John F. Kennedy School of Fine Arts in Oakland, CA.   During her tenure as a registrar of the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Judy arranged and oversaw all the fine art exhibits brought to Alaska from four continents.   Judy trained every framer who ever worked at the AB Art Gallery, rural Walcott, in art preservation. During her short, annual ND visits, she was intrigued by the beauty of the prairie, the peaceful landscapes and the sunsets that seemed to her, to go on forever.   It is with great respect that her friends, Dr. Leanne Converse and Lianne Rockstad give this $500 scholarship in memory of their dear friend Judy Baletka. Recipient: Keely Torgerson North Dakota Dollars for Scholars (NDDFS) and North Dakota College Access Network (NDCAN)   NDDFS and NDCAN established a new scholarship in an effort to provide students with funding for college. NDCAN, which is administered by Bank of North Dakota, donated funding for at least one scholarship to be awarded to a student from each Dollars for Scholars community in North Dakota.
